In a nutshell

This trial is examining the effectiveness of a whole food diet for women with stable metastatic (spread) breast cancer currently undergoing treatment. The main outcomes to be measured will be the recruitment of patients approached, adherence to diet and change in symptoms and biomarkers. This study is being conducted in New York City, NY.

The details

The connection between diet and breast cancer is still under investigation. While a good deal of research has examined the link between diet and breast cancer risk, the role of diet in breast cancer treatment is not clear.

This research will examine a strict whole-food, plant-based diet in women with stable metastatic breast cancer who are currently undergoing treatment. It will also provide data on dietary intake and the effect of plant-based nutrition on different outcomes reflecting cancer prognosis and overall health.

Who are they looking for?

This study is recruiting 36 women who are currently receiving treatment for metastatic breast cancer and expected to survive for six months. Any hormone/HER2 status is eligible.

Patients should not have diabetes, gastro-intestinal issues, recent surgery, current smoking or alcohol habit, or warfarin use.

How will it work

Patients will be randomly assigned to one of two groups. One group will be provided three meals daily for eight weeks, attend weekly office visits and take a daily multivitamin. The other group will maintain current intake and take a provided multivitamin. All patients will have baseline assessment and 6-week assessment, in addition to a 3-week blood test.
