This trial is examining the effects of different diabetes self-management strategies in African American and Hispanic women with type 2 diabetes (T2D). The main outcomes to be measured will be the change in physical activity levels and the change in HbA1c (measures average blood glucose over the last 3 months). This study is being conducted in Boston, MA.
The details
Women from minority groups are more likely to have T2D. Diabetes self-management (DSM) education and support helps people with diabetes to manage their condition. This may be delivered face-to-face or online.
This study will evaluate the effectiveness of internet-based, online DSM education. The main outcome will be measured as the change in physical activity and HbA1c after either face-to-face or online DSM.
Who are they looking for?
This study is looking for 228 African American and Hispanic women with T2D. The participants must have access to a telephone. Their current treatment may include diet or medications.
Participants must remain in the area to attend sessions during the study period. They may not have taken glucocorticoids (drug that reduces inflammation) in the last 3 months. They may not have any other medical condition that will prevent them from following the diet guidelines in the study. They may not have had a heart attack in the last 6 months. They may not have a serious psychiatric illness, except for depression.
How will it work
The participants will be randomly divided into 2 groups. Both will engage in group visits. Diet, physical activity, medications, stress reduction, and diabetes self management will be discussed in the group visits. Each participant will also speak with a physician for 10-15 minutes. The first group will receive these visits online. The other group will meet face-to-face. They will have visits once a week for 8 weeks. They will be followed up at 8 weeks, and again after 6 months.
HbA1c, cholesterol, blood pressure, and body weight will be measured after 8 weeks and after 6 months. Participants will wear a monitor for 1 week to examine their physical activity level at these times. At these times they will be given questionnaires to examine their self-management, quality of life, mental health, diet, stress, social support, and use of health services.
