In a nutshell
This study looked at different treatments for urinary tract infections (UTIs – infection of the urethra or bladder) caused by aerococcus bacteria. The study found that nitrofurantoin (Macrobid), pivmecillinam (Selexid) and ciprofloxacin (Cipro) were effective antibiotic treatments for UTIs caused by aerococcus.
Some background
UTIs are a common problem that can be caused by different bacteria. Aerococcus is a type of bacteria that can cause UTIs. These can cause some complications such as problems in the blood and heart. It is important to research antibiotic treatment for UTIs caused by aerococcus.
Methods & findings
31,629 urine samples were analyzed. 144 samples had aerococcus growing in them and 72 patients with UTI had antibiotic treatment.
Nitrofurantoin was the most common treatment and had 71-76% effectiveness in treating one type of aerococcus (A.urinae) and 42-50% in another type (A. sanguinicola). Pivmecillinam was successful in bladder UTI caused by A.urinae. Ciprofloxacin was effectively used in patients with pyelonephritis (kidney infection).
The bottom line
The study concluded that antibiotic treatment is effective for UTIs caused by different types of aerococcus.
The fine print
The study had a small sample size.
