In a nutshell
This study reviewed the long-term effectiveness of the AdVanceXP male sling for treatment of urinary incontinence following prostate surgery. The study concluded that the AdVanceXP male sling was effective and safe in the treatment of male stress urinary incontinence.
Some background
Urinary incontinence is common among men undergoing prostate surgery. Several surgical methods are available for the treatment of urinary incontinence among men. A retrourethral male sling called AdVance, was shown to be effective and safe in treating male urinary incontinence. In recent years, a new generation of male slings have been developed, called AdVanceXP. However, until now only small studies with a short follow-up investigated the usefulness of the new AdVanceXP sling. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the long-term effectiveness and safety of the AdVanceXP male sling.
Methods & findings
Ninety-four men with persistent urinary incontinence due to prostate surgery were included in this study. Men were treated with the AdVanceXP sling at 6 different medical centers, and were followed for up to 2 years.
At 1-year follow-up, 66.3% of patients could be considered as cured (not using pads), and 25.3% as improved. At 2-year follow-up, 73.1% of patients could be classed as cured, and 19.6% as improved. There was no change in urine continence over time among patients reporting improved urinary continence. Quality of life, as reported by patient questioners, was significantly improved. Patient age, weight, and type of prostate surgery undergone did not seem to affect results.
Overall, surgical complications were reported among 7 men (7.4% of participants), and included increased urinary incontinence and urinary tract infections.
The bottom line
The authors concluded that the new AdVanceXP male sling was effective and safe in the treatment of male urinary incontinence after prostate surgery.
