In a nutshell

This study examined if psychological symptoms in patients with overactive bladder (OAB) are associated with vitamin D and calcium levels. This study concluded that increased vitamin D and calcium intake may improve urinary and psychological symptoms and quality of life in patients with OAB.

Some background

Overactive bladder (OAB) is a common syndrome. It is associated with multiple urinary tract symptoms such as urinary urgency, frequency, and urine leakage. It could affect the patient's quality of life and well-being. It is also associated with psychological symptoms such as anxiety and depression.

Vitamin D is required for good overall health. Sunshine is a good source of vitamin D and it can also be taken in tablet form. It is necessary to absorb calcium properly. Calcium can be found in dairy products and can also be taken in tablet form.

It is not known if there is a relationship between vitamin D levels, daily calcium intake, and OAB.

Methods & findings

The study included 55 patients with OAB and 129 healthy patients without OAB (the controls). Psychological symptoms were assessed using a standardized questionnaire. Vitamin D levels in the blood were measured in all patients. Patients with OAB with low vitamin D level received vitamin D tablets. Urinary symptoms, psychological symptoms, and quality of life were measured before and after receiving vitamin D and dairy products.

Low levels of Vitamin D were more common in patients with OAB (80%) than in controls (34.9%). Depression was seen in 43.7% of those with OAB and 20.2% of controls.  Anxiety was also more common in OAB (52.8% of patients) compared to the control group (10.9%). 85.5% of patients with OAB group had muscle and bone pain compared to none in the control group.

Vitamin D supplements with increased calcium intake were associated with improved urinary symptoms, psychological distress, and quality of life in patients with OAB.

The bottom line

This study concluded that increased vitamin D and calcium intake may improve urinary and psychological symptoms and quality of life in OAB syndrome.

The fine print

This was a small study. Further studies with more patients are required.
