In a nutshell
This study looked at the safety and effectiveness of moxibustion for the treatment of overactive bladder (OAB). This study concluded that OAB symptoms were improved with moxibustion treatment.
Some background
Overactive Bladder (OAB) is a sudden, frequent urge to urinate. It may result in urge incontinence (inability to hold on to urine). OAB urination is usually eight or more times a day and two or more times at night. OAB can have a negative impact on quality of life. Medications can be taken to calm the muscles and nerves which cause OAB. These medications however, can carry side effects.
Moxibustion is a heat therapy. In this therapy, plant materials are burnt close to the skin or on the skin. Moxibustion may be an alternative treatment for OAB without the complications that some other OAB treatments have.
Methods & findings
28 patients were recruited for an 8 week study. The patients were divided into two groups, A and B. Group A had 8-12 sessions of moxibustion and behavioral therapy. Group B had behavioral therapy only. The treatments were given for 4 weeks. In the second 4 weeks of the study, treatments were switched over. Group A had behavioral therapy only. Group B had 8-12 moxibustion sessions and behavioral therapy. OAB symptoms were assessed by questionnaire.
How often patients urinated during the day and during the night decreased with moxibustion treatment. OAB symptoms were not as severe. Some patients however, did experience burns during the moxibustion treatment.
The bottom line
This study concluded that moxibustion could improve OAB symptoms. It also concluded that moxibustion may be an alternative treatment to medications or lifestyle changes for OAB.
The fine print
The authors note that this study contained only a small number of patients. This may affect the study's results.
