In a nutshell
This study compared the quality of life improvements of patients who were bothered and were not bothered by frequent urination at night, called nocturia. Researchers found that both men whom were bothered and were bothered by nocturia had improved quality of life after treatment.
Some background
Nocturia is a condition classified as one or more urinations during the night. Nocturia can lead to day-time sleepiness, reduce daily life activity, and increase the risk of falls. Patients may not be bothered by nocturia, and may view frequent trips to the bathroom as a normal sign of aging. However, whether or not patients are bothered by nocturia, they can still experience the negative effects. This study wanted to research whether both men who were bothered, and not bothered by nocturia could improve with treatment.
Methods & findings
This study examined men 45 years or older who attended 12 different hospitals across Korea. All men experienced two or more urinations during the night for more than a three month period. Patients were put on different drugs and different treatments after discussion with their doctor. Patients were followed up with 12 weeks after treatment.
After the twelve week follow up there were 48 patients in the non-bothering nocturia group and 50 patients in the bothered group. Both groups experienced a decrease in nocturia episodes after twelve weeks. Both groups also experienced improvements in the tests used to assess the discomfort from nocturia. There was no significant difference between the improvements among both groups.
The bottom line
This study concluded that treatment for nocturia decreased nighttime urination and discomfort, whether nor not patients were initially bothered by nocturia.
The fine print
This study shows that treatment for nocturia can be effective, but did not outline any specific treatment
