Some background
Nocturia is a condition in which you wake up during the night because you have to urinate. Many women Desmopressin is a treatment option for nocturia. Many studies have shown the benefits of desmopressin, particularly in men with enlarged prostates. However, there is less research on the safety and effectiveness of this medication in women with nocturia.
Methods & findings
This study included data from seven other articles. Each article compared women on desmopressin to those on a fake medication (placebo). They also compared the dose taken in each article (less than 25 μg, 25 μg, or more than 25 μg).
Desmopressin reduced the occurrence of nocturia. The length of time before needing to get up to urinate was increased by those taking desmopressin. This increased the duration of sleep for these women. There was no difference between the different doses. There were minimal side-effects and similar to the control groups and between those who took different doses.
The bottom line
This study found that desmopressin is safe and effective for women with nocturia.
The fine print
The studies included had different protocols and designs. This might limit the conclusions that can be drawn.
