In a nutshell
This study investigated if a herbal blend could improve female fertility.
They found that a herbal blend of Vitex agnus-castus extract (Vitex), Maca extract and folate may be used in women trying to conceive.
Some background
Female infertility (FI) accounts for 40% of cases of couple infertility. The cause of FI is not always clear. In some cases, there is an unexplained infertility (UI). Herbal blends are sometimes used by patients to treat a condition. In some cases, there is medical evidence to support this. Some studies suggest that certain herbal compounds may improve female fertility. These include vitex agnus-castus extract (Vitex) and Lepidium meyeni or Maca extract.
There is interest in combining these HCs to improve female fertility. It is unclear if a herbal blend with Vitex, Maca, and folate can improve fertility outcomes in women trying to conceive.
Methods & findings
This study included 189 women trying to become pregnant. Women were assigned to two treatment groups. One group received the herbal blend with Vitex, Maca extract, and active folate. This was in the form of a capsule. The second group was treated with the same herbal blend and a vitamin and mineral capsule. Fertility outcomes included ovulation and pregnancy rates. The study lasted 18 months.
Pregnancy rates were similar in both groups. The overall pregnancy rate was 37%. The number of women ovulating increased during the study. There was no difference in the ovulation rate between the groups.
The bottom line
The authors concluded that a herbal blend of Vitex, Maca extract, and folate may be used in women trying to become pregnant.
The fine print
The number of patients in the study was low. The cause of FI varied between patients. More controlled studies are needed.
