In a nutshell
This study investigated whether combining perindopril (Coversyl), indapamide (Lozol) and amlodipine (Norvasc) was effective in reducing blood pressure long-term. They found that this combination of medications reduced blood pressure over a 3-month period.
Some background
High blood pressure (hypertension) may have multiple or unknown causes. As a result, many patients require multiple medications that act in different ways to achieve blood pressure control.
Evidence suggests that a combination of perindopril, indapamide and amlodipine may be effective to manage blood pressure. Perindopril reduces blood pressure by preventing blood vessels from contracting; indapamide acts as a diuretic (increases urine) and amlodipine dilates (widens) blood vessels. Each of these medications has been studied, however the effect of administering this triple combination has not been investigated.
Methods & findings
11,209 patients were included in this study. Patients underwent triple combination therapy over a 3-month period. Patients received varying concentrations of each drug as per physician’s recommendation. Blood pressure readings and ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM) recordings were taken at the beginning and end of the study.
After 3 months, 72.8% of patients reached the target blood pressure of 140/90 mmHg. 51 patients experienced drug-related adverse events, including swelling of the legs and cough. No medication-related severe adverse events occurred.
The bottom line
This study concluded that the combination of perindopril, indapamide and amlodipine improved blood pressure control over a 3-month period.
The fine print
There was no wash-out phase in this study. This means that previous medication may have impacted the effects seen in this study.
