In a nutshell
This study aimed to provide treatment options for young men experiencing erectile dysfunction (ED). This study recommended drugs such as phosphodiesterase-5 inhibitors (PDE5i) for the treatment of ED in men under 40.
Some background
Erectile dysfunction (ED) is the inability to get or keep an erection firm enough to have sexual intercourse. It can be caused by several medical reasons. However, sometimes there is no identifiable cause. ED can be treated by a PDE5i drug. An example of this is sildenafil (Viagra).
It is unclear what is the best treatment for ED with no obvious medical cause.
Methods & findings
This study included 73 men. They completed a detailed questionnaire regarding their medical and sexual history at the initial consultation. They were started on a PDE5i first. If needed, they would have daily psychosexual therapy. Injections were the last line of therapy. Six months later they completed another questionnaire to evaluate their treatment.
85% of men reported problems obtaining an erection at the start of treatment. Following a minimum of 6 months of treatment, only 42% reported the same problem. 58% were satisfied with their erectile function. Questionnaire scores after more than 6 months of treatment showed a significant improvement in erectile function, orgasmic function, and overall satisfaction.
The bottom line
This study recommended PDE5is for the treatment of ED with no obvious cause in men under 40.
The fine print
This study was based on patient questionnaires. Information is not always complete and reliable with this type of study. Also, a big number of patients were lost to follow-up, so further larger studies are needed.
