In a nutshell
This study investigated the effectiveness of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) with tadalafil (Cialis) to treat erectile dysfunction (ED). Researchers suggested that this treatment helps treat ED with no increase in side effects.
Some background
ED is present in about 50% of men aged 40 to 70 years. It is the inability to get and keep an erection firm enough for sexual intercourse. Tadalafil is one of the first-line recommended treatments. However, prior studies showed that around 20% of ED patients receiving tadalafil do not see improvements.
TCM can make up for the limited effectiveness of ED drugs. It is an ancient medical system used in China to prevent, diagnose and treat diseases. Patients are treated using acupuncture, diet, herbal therapy, meditation, physical exercise, and massage. Prior studies showed that TCM can treat ED and improve other symptoms.
The effectiveness of both TCM and tadalafil combined in patients with ED is still not known.
Methods & findings
This study reviewed the results of 11 other studies. It included overall 903 patients with ED. 451 patients received TCM with tadalafil (combination group). 452 patients received tadalafil alone.
The combined treatment improved ED and sexual satisfaction when compared to tadalafil alone. No significant differences in side effects were seen between groups.
The bottom line
This study concluded that traditional Chinese medicine with tadalafil improves the outcomes of patients with ED compared to tadalafil alone.
The fine print
This study reviewed other studies with different protocols. This might make it difficult to interpret the results. More controlled studies are needed.
