In a nutshell
This study compared the effectiveness and safety of sildenafil (Viagra) with or without L-arginine in patients with erectile dysfunction (ED). Researchers suggested that combining sildenafil and L-arginine results in improved ED outcomes.
Some background
ED is the inability to get or keep an erection firm enough to have sex. An erection occurs when blood flow to the penis increases, and it becomes larger and firmer. ED usually has a secondary cause, such as disease, injury or side effects of drugs. ED affects as many as 30 million American men and is increasing by age.
Nitric oxide is essential for an erection. In patients with ED, this substance might not be present in enough amounts. Drugs such as sildenafil stop the action of nitric oxide inhibitors. L-arginine is an amino acid that activates the production of nitric oxide. These drugs have been used alone to treat ED. However, it is not known if there is an improvement in effectiveness if they are used in combination.
Methods & findings
This study included information about 59 patients with ED. These patients were assigned to receive sildenafil alone (29; group 1) or in combination with L-arginine (30; group 2). Patients were assessed at the start of the study and after 8 weeks.
Both groups presented improved outcomes after treatment when compared to the start of the treatment. However, group 2 had a slightly greater improvement in effectiveness.
The side effects were very similar between both groups. However, gastritis (stomach inflammation) was more common in group 2.
The bottom line
This study concluded that adding L-arginine to sildenafil increases the effectiveness of ED treatment.
The fine print
The study included a limited number of participants and a short follow-up period. Further studies with a bigger population and longer follow-up are necessary.
