In a nutshell
This study compared the use of tadalafil (Cialis) daily with using tadalafil when needed such as before sexual intercourse. The study concluded that using tadalafil daily for 12 weeks may not make a difference to erectile dysfunction (ED).
Some background
Tadalafil is a drug treatment for ED that improves blood flow to the penis. It is often take shortly before intercourse to help with erection. It is necessary to assess if taking tadalafil daily has more benefit than taking it when needed.
Methods & findings
This article looked at 8 previous studies comparing daily tadalafil versus when needed. The studies included a total of 1,484 patients. The study used the International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF) to measure improvements with daily tadalafil.
Use of tadalafil daily increased the IIEF by 1.82 points when compared to using tadalafil when needed. This difference was not statistically significant.
The bottom line
The study concluded that using tadalafil daily instead of just when needed may not have a clinical benefit to patients.
The fine print
This meta-analysis study revealed that there is little research comparing taking tadalafil daily and when needed. More research may be needed for better understanding.
