In a nutshell
This study reported the extended follow-up outcomes on RestoreX effectiveness in men with Peyronie´s disease (PD). Researchers suggested that RestoreX improves the length, curve, and sexual function of these patients.
Some background
PD is caused by the formation of scar tissue inside the penis. This can result in a bent erect penis which can cause pain and erectile dysfunction. Penile traction therapy is a new treatment that aims to restore the form and length of the penis of patients with PD.
RestoreX is a medical device used for traction therapy in PD. This device may stretch the penis straight out, or in the opposite direction of the curve. It is used for 2 30 minutes sessions per day at home. Prior studies showed that RestoreX improves the length, curve, and sexual function in men with PD. The 3-month effectiveness of RestoreX has been demonstrated. However, the effectiveness of this device for a longer follow-up is still not known.
Methods & findings
This study included information about 110 men with PD. These patients were assigned to receive RestoreX (30, 60, or 90 minutes daily) or no therapy (control group) for 3 months. All participants were then allowed to use RestoreX for another 3 months (6-month follow-up). The treatment phase was then finished, and men were followed-up 3 months later (9-month follow-up).
The average duration of penile therapy was 31.1 minutes in both 6 and 9-month follow-up. No significant side effects were reported, with skin redness being the most common effect and resolving within minutes.
Patients who changed from no therapy to RestoreX had significant improvements. These patients observed improvements in penis length (1.7 – 2.0 cm) and curvature (by 18 – 20%). Men who continued with RestoreX after the initial 3-month follow-up had additional length improvement (0.6 – 0.8 cm). However, no further improvements in curvature were observed.
Overall, the use of RestoreX for 15 minutes a day or more was associated with 2.0 – 2.3 cm penis length gains and 18 – 21% curve improvement. Erectile dysfunction and PD satisfaction were also significantly improved. 95% of men treated for 6 months had length gains and 61% had curve improvements. RestoreX was preferred over all other PD treatments, and 100% preferred it over other traction devices.
The bottom line
This study concluded that RestoreX is a good and safe treatment option for men with PD.
The fine print
This study included a limited number of participants. Further studies with bigger populations are necessary. This study was funded by PathRight and Mayo Clinic, the manufacturers of RestoreX.
