In a nutshell
This study investigated sexual satisfaction among penile prosthesis users. Researchers concluded that the level of satisfaction with implanted penile devices is very high, with a positive impact on sexual, psychological and relational function.
Some background
Penile implants have developed remarkably over the past decade. Multiple studies have demonstrated high levels of sexual function among men using penile prostheses. However, research exploring the subjective experience of men using these implants, and the reasons behind satisfaction or dissatisfaction, is scarce.
Methods & findings
This research interviewed 47 men with erectile dysfunction who underwent surgery to implant a prosthetic penile device. A variety of devices were being used. Men were asked to answer the following four questions: (i) “Would you repeat the surgery?”; (ii) “Would you recommend the surgery?”; (iii) “How satisfied are you with the device?”; and (iv) “Could you explain the motives of your satisfaction/dissatisfaction?”.
The majority of men (79%) reported to be satisfied with their device. Only five men reported being “very dissatisfied” (10.6%), two were “somewhat dissatisfied” (4.3%), three “neither satisfied nor dissatisfied” (6.4%), eight were “satisfied” (17%), and 29 were “very satisfied” (61.7%).
Among the 14 men with malleable penile devices, 11 stated that they would undergo surgery again, and all 14 would recommend a penile implantation to friends in the same situation. Among the 33 men with inflatable penile devices 27 would undergo surgery again, and 31 would recommend it.
Analysis revealed the main themes for men’s satisfaction with the device. Different psychological factors included increased self-esteem and confidence, enhancement of male identity, major life changes, and improved self-image. Improvement of sexual function was also consistently reported, and referred mainly to achievement of vaginal penetration, increase of sexual desire, increased sexual satisfaction, and increase of penis size. Relationship improvement and the possibility of giving pleasure to partner were also noted. Improvement in urinary function was also reported by several men.
The main reasons reported for dissatisfaction with device were: decreased size of the penis, unrealized expectations, not having sexual relationships (due to device not working or other reasons), artificial/unnatural feel, delayed ejaculation, device malfunction, and partner related reasons.
The bottom line
The level of satisfaction with penile prostheses is very high, with a positive impact on sexual, psychological and relational functioning.

Great when they work. Mine gave out a year in and it’ll be over a year before it’s replaced!
Which one did you have, and which part stopped working? Were you in a accident?
Is going through the pain worth it?no_redirect=1
Are the feelings the same?
Should I be in the mood before I inflate it?
Will I ever get that slight tingle in the shower making me think about playing?
I’m a year and 4 months post surgery, I have pain when not inflated, pain inflated my penis is bent pointing to the right on the left side is a hard piece that feels like the tube is crimped or bent as if the tube is too long.
If someone else is having a problem like this I would like to talk with you.
Steve, replying to your note.
Just past week 3 mark after surgery. I have drafted a letter to Dr. asking where I should be at right now because he will be showing me how to use the pump. Don’t think he will be able to because I will probably deck him
In the letter, I tell him that I am still waiting for the malleable part of implant because everything is stiff right now (no pun). I know I will scare someone away, lol.
When standing at urinal, we usually just whip it out and piss. For me, it is a ceremony, so I would rather just go into a stall and sit. I still have problems sleeping because I am sensitive and stiff.
The stitches he said would dissolve still poke me at times, making things worse.
As for the bending to one side, all the vids, pics and lectures say I should not have that, so I hope you have spoken to your Dr. about it.
John, I’m now 22 months post surgery, I still have some discomfort, still points to the right, having said that I was thinking of having it removed, after talking to the Dr and naturally my wife I’ve elected to keep it. Sex is good, orgasms are the same, still some discomfort but I’d rather have some sex rather than none at all. Dr told meet to pump the hell out of it when I think I’m erect to to pump a couple more. John stay with it, if for no other reason, your wife.
I had a penile implant on 11/13/19. I had to wait for mid December before seeing doctor on how to use pump and deflate. But I have so much pain, so I saw my doctor. He said I have an infection and gave me pain pills and antibiotics. After waiting another 2 weeks, I have no improvement. I will see the doc on 1/3/20. I hope this surgery wasn’t done in vain. I am so disappointed so far.
My urologist implanted a penile prosthesis for me and I couldn’t be more pleased. I certainly wish I had this done years ago. It’s absolutely amazing. I can be ready for sex any time I wish. I don’t have to plan ahead. It feels so natural. The sensations are the same as those I had 30 years ago. Everything works. normally. You can’t tell the there is an implant just by looking. This is really no different than any other prosthesis that allows you to live a normal life. Nothing to be embarrassed about. Dr. Sech performed the surgery and did a fantastic job and one of the best things is that he is here in Asheville. The surgery was performed at Mission Hospital. He is very professional and knowledgeable with a very professional staff.
I have had an implant for over ten years. I enjoy intercourse though am unable to ejaculate (prostatectomy) but when I self-manipulate I can have the feelings of ejaculation. Unfortunately, not during intercourse. The implant did relieve a lot of depression I was feeling since becoming impotent. I recommend an implant for anyone who has difficulty achieving an erection.
