In a nutshell
This study looked at using sildenafil (Viagra) and collagenase clostridium hystoliticum (CCH) or using CCH alone to treat Peyronie's disease. It concluded that sildenafil and CCH together could improve Peyronie's disease symptoms more than CCH alone.
Some background
Peyronie’s disease (PD) is a curvature of the penis when it is erect. The curvature is caused by scar tissue, called a plaque, forming in the penis. Surgery to remove the scar tissue is an option to treat PD, though it can be associated with complications.
Collagenase Clostridium histolyticum (CCH) acts to breakdown the plaque with enzymes (a type of protein). CCH has been shown to be safe and effective in other studies. CCH may also prove to be a good option for patients with PD who do not want to have surgery. Sildenafil (Viagra) is a drug usually given to patients who have erectile dysfunction. It increases blood flow to the penis and causes an erection. Studies are being carried out to determine if sildenafil and CCH are effective together to treat PD.
Methods & findings
50 patients were included in the study. These patients were divided into two groups. Group A received both sildenafil and CCH. Group B received CCH only. Patients were assessed for sexual function, penile curve and other PD symptoms.
Combination treatment of sildenafil and CCH improved penile curve, sexual function and PD symptoms more than CCH treatment alone. In the sildenafil and CCH group, penile curve improved by approximately 54%. In the CCH only group, penile curve improved by approximately 41%.
The bottom line
This study concluded that CCH was a more effective treatment for PD when given with sildenafil.
The fine print
The authors note that the patients were not randomly assigned to the sildenafil and CCH group or the CCH group. This may affect the study's results.
