In a nutshell
This study investigated the effectiveness of RestoreX on penile length and erectile function in patients after prostate surgery. The data showed that RestoreX treatment improves penile length and erectile function in men who underwent prostate surgery.
Some background
Prostate surgery can impact male sexual function. The effects can go from reductions in penis length, erectile dysfunction, an increased risk for Peyronie's disease (the development of scar tissue under the skin of the penis), among others. These disorders greatly affect the sexual ability of men, decreasing their quality of life and their partners.
Penile treatment is associated with various therapies such as drugs, penis injections, and/or vacuum erection devices. However, these are only of limited effectiveness.
Penile traction therapy is another therapy commonly used to improve penile curvature and length. It consists of wearing a penile traction device for a set amount of time each day. The device stretches the penis straight out, or in the direction that's opposite of the curve. It has shown good results in patients with Peyronie's disease.
RestoreX is a penile traction device that only requires 30 minutes of daily use. Prior studies suggested that RestoreX improves erectile function.
However, the effectiveness of RestoreX on penile length and erectile function in patients after prostate surgery is still unclear.
Methods & findings
This study involved 82 patients who had prostate surgery. Patients were initially randomly assigned either to receive RestoreX therapy or no treatment. After 6 months, 45 patients were divided into four groups according to the average time the device was used. Group 1 included 9 patients who initially received no treatment, followed by RestoreX therapy for less than 15 minutes/day. Group 2 included 9 patients who initially received no treatment followed by RestoreX therapy for more than 15 minutes/day. Group 3 included 13 patients who initially received treatment with RestoreX therapy and continued it for less than 15 minutes/day. Group 4 included 14 patients who initially received treatment with RestoreX therapy and continued it for more than 15 minutes/day. A standardized questionnaire was used to evaluate erectile function.
After 6 months, group 4 achieved a greater improvement in penile length, erectile function, and sexual satisfaction compared to group 2.
Patients who changed from no therapy to RestoreX (group 2) failed to achieve equivalent improvements in penile length or erectile function compared to patients treated early (groups 3 and 4). Patients who changed from initial RestoreX therapy to no treatment (group 3) experienced preserved penile length and erectile function despite stopping therapy.
The bottom line
This study concluded that RestoreX treatment improves penis length and erectile function in men who underwent prostate surgery.
The fine print
This study had a very small number of participants. This study only included patients treated at a single institution in the USA. Larger studies are needed.
