In a nutshell

This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of tadalafil (Cialis) combined with l-arginine for the treatment of erectile dysfunction (ED) in patients with diabetes mellitus. This study found that the combination is more effective than each drug alone for these patients.

Some background

Erectile dysfunction (ED) is the inability to get or keep an erection firm enough to have sexual intercourse. It can be caused by several medical reasons. It is commonly found in aging men due to decreasing testosterone (the main male sex hormone) levels.

Patients with diabetes commonly have complications in their blood vessels. This can also lead to ED. It can reduce the quality of life of patients. There are many different non-surgical treatment options for ED. One common treatment is tadalafil. L-arginine is an amino acid found in food. It can improve the functioning of blood vessels. The safety and effectiveness of the combination of tadalafil and l-arginine for ED in diabetic patients are under investigation.

Methods & findings

This study included 108 patients with diabetes and ED. They were randomly assigned to 4 groups of 27 patients each. Group 1 had tadalafil and l-arginine. Group 2 took tadalafil alone. Group 3 took l-arginine alone. Group 4 took a placebo, a fake medication. Questionnaires were used to assess sexual satisfaction.

Groups 1, 2, and 3 showed significant improvements in sexual satisfaction compared to group 4. Group 1 showed significant improvements in erectile function scores compared to the beginning of the study and to groups 2 and 3. Total testosterone levels were also increased in group 1 compared to the other groups after treatment.

The bottom line

This study found that tadalafil and l-arginine can be effectively used to treat ED in diabetic patients.

The fine print

This study was based on a questionnaire that references the previous 1 month. Questionnaire data is not always reliable. Further studies are needed.
