This review focused on the effects of curcumin on blood glucose and lipid (blood fat) levels in patients with uncomplicated type 2 diabetes (T2D). This analysis showed that curcumin has benefits for glucose metabolism and lipid functions in these patients.
Some background
T2D is a chronic disease closely related to overweight and obesity, which are also associated with high inflammation in the body. Treatment for T2D usually starts with diet changes and exercise. In the past years, more research has focused on the role of foods and herbs to reduce blood glucose (sugar) and lipids.
Curcumin is an herb that gives the yellow color in turmeric. It is known for its anti-inflammatory properties and is used in traditional medicine. Some studies also showed that curcumin might reduce blood glucose and lipid levels. However, the effects of curcumin on glucose control and lipid levels in patients with T2D are still not clear.
Methods & findings
This review analyzed 7 articles about curcumin use in patients with uncomplicated T2D.
Patients treated with curcumin showed a significant reduction in HbA1c levels (a measure of blood glucose control over the past 2-3 months). T2D is associated with insulin resistance, evaluated through the HOMA index. The higher the HOMA index, the higher the insulin resistance. There was also a significant reduction in HOMA index in patients taking curcumin supplements compared to those without curcumin. There was also a significant reduction in low-density lipoprotein (LDL; 'bad cholesterol') in patients treated with curcumin compared to those who did not take curcumin.
The bottom line
This study showed that curcumin may have benefits in reducing blood glucose and LDL-cholesterol in patients with uncomplicated T2D.
The fine print
The studies analyzed had small numbers of participants. There were also some differences in study designs and the daily dosage of curcumin. Further studies are needed.
