In a nutshell
This study looked at the effects of dutasteride (Avodart) on psychology. It concluded that dutasteride does not have negative effects on patient's mental states.
Some background
BPH is an enlargement of the prostate gland. An enlarged prostate can cause urinary symptoms. It can have a negative impact on quality of life. Treatments for BPH may include medication or surgery. Medications may not help BPH symptoms. Some men may then decide they want a procedure.
Dutasteride is a BPH medication. Dutasteride slows down the production of hormones. These hormones can promote prostate growth. These hormones have roles in other parts of the body, however. They have roles in the nervous system. Studies are being carried out to see what the side effects are of suppressing these hormones.
Methods & findings
40 men with BPH were included in this study. These men were divided into two groups. One group took dutasteride. The other group did not take dutasteride. These men filled out questionnaires and had assessments on their mental state and ability to think and carry out tasks.
There was no difference between the group taking dutasteride and the control group. There was no relationship between taking dutasteride and the results of the psychological and cognitive tests.
The bottom line
This study concluded that taking dutasteride was not connected to a decline in psychological and thinking ability.
The fine print
The authors note that the tests were more general than specific. This may affect this study's results.
