In a nutshell
This study evaluated the effectiveness and safety of Quisqualis indica (Rangoon creeper or Chinese honeysuckle; a type of plant) extract for the treatment of patients with lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS). The data showed that Quisqualis indica extract was safe and effective for the treatment of these patients.
Some background
Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate gland. These patients often experience lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS). These include symptoms such as difficulties emptying the bladder, urine leakage, or getting up to urinate during the night. Standard treatments for BPH and LUTS involve surgical procedures and medications that can often impact sexual function and patients’ quality of life (QoL).
Quisqualis indica plant extract has been suggested as a possible treatment for LUTS associated with BPH. Quisqalis indica has been safely used for the treatment of roundworms and pinworms. However, the safety and effectiveness of Quisqualis indica for treating men with moderate LUTS remains under investigation.
Methods & findings
This study involved 113 patients suffering from moderate LUTS. Patients were randomly assigned into three groups. Group 1 included 37 patients who received 1000 mg of Quisqualis indica extract per day. Group 2 included 36 patients who received 2000 mg of Quisqualis indica extract per day. Group 3 included 40 patients who received a placebo. The patients were followed up after 6 and 12 weeks.
The International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS) was measured before and after treatment. This questionnaire can be used to screen for, rapidly diagnose, and track the symptoms of LUTS. Erectile function, quality of life (QoL), the maximum urine flow rate (Qmax), and the volume of urine left in the bladder after urination were also measured.
After 6 and 12 weeks, the total IPSS score was significantly improved for both groups 1 and 2 compared to group 2.
After 6 weeks, the maximum urine flow rate and the volume of urine left in the bladder after urination improved in group 1 compared to group 3. After 6 and 12 weeks, incomplete emptying and frequency of urination significantly improved in group 1 compared to group 3. After 12 weeks, QoL was significantly improved in group 1 compared to group 3.
After 12 weeks, orgasmic function and overall sexual satisfaction significantly improved in group 2 compared to group 3.
No serious side effects occurred in any of the three groups.
The bottom line
This study concluded that Quisqualis indica extract was safe and effective for the treatment of patients with moderate LUTS.
The fine print
The sample size was very small. The follow-up time was too short. This study only included patients treated at two institutions in Korea.
