In a nutshell
This study aimed to compared two treatment options, bipolar endoscopic enucleation of the prostate (b-EEP) and bipolar transurethral resection of the prostate (b-TURP), for benign prostatic obstruction (BPO). This study found that b-EEP is an effective and safe surgical treatment for BPO.
Some background
Benign prostatic obstruction (BPO) is a non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate gland. BPO can impede the flow of urine. This leads to lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) such as dribbling of urine and a feeling of incomplete bladder emptying. Surgery can be used to treat this. Two types are bipolar endoscopic enucleation of the prostate (b-EEP) or bipolar transurethral resection of the prostate (b-TURP). b-TURP is carried out through the urethra. It is a commonly used procedure for BPO. b-EEP is a newer procedure using a laser to remove parts of the prostate blocking urine flow.
It is unclear which option is better.
Methods & findings
This study analyzed 14 other studies. They compared b-EEP to b-TURP in terms of side-effects and effectiveness.
B-EEP was found to have a lower risk of side-effects. It was also associated with less chance of needing a further surgery. It also had shorter hospitalization and shorter times with catheter.
The bottom line
This study found that b-EEP is an effective and safe surgical treatment for BPO.
The fine print
The studies analyzed had different protocols and follow-up periods. All the surgeries were done by experienced surgeons. Further studies are needed.
