In a nutshell

This trial will investigate education interventions to improve blood pressure control (BPC) in uncontrolled hypertension. The main outcome will be medication adherence (MA). This study is recruiting in California, USA.

The details

Hypertension is a very common condition. Blood pressure control (BPC) is important in hypertension. If BPC is not achieved a person will develop uncontrolled hypertension. Uncontrolled hypertension increases the risk of heart attack, stroke, and death. Medication adherence is an important part of BPC. If a patient does not take their medication correctly then BPC is difficult. Education strategies can be used to improve medication adherence.

This trial will investigate education interventions to improve BPC in uncontrolled hypertensionThe main outcome will be medication adherence.

Who are they looking for?

This study is recruiting 500 patients with uncontrolled hypertension. Uncontrolled hypertension is defined as a blood pressure above 140/90 mmHg. Patients must have previously visited the study clinic in the last 12 months.

Patients with end-stage kidney disease are excluded from the trial.

How will it work

Patients will be assigned to one of two groups. One group will undergo the Mi Propio Camino (MPC) strategy. The MPC will involve 4 educational sessions. Participants will learn the importance of medication adherence and how best to apply the advice to their situation. The second group will undergo Habilidades para Controlar la Presion (HCP). This also involves 4 sessions. This will also involve education on BPC and medication adherence.

The main outcome will be medication adherence at 6 months.
