In a nutshell
This study investigated the impact of levodopa treatment on the quality of life of patients with Parkinson's disease. Researchers suggested that levodopa is associated with negative side effects that decrease the quality of life of these patients.
Some background
Parkinson's disease (PD) is the second most common brain disease in the world. This disease is linked with age and affects brain cells impacting the abilities controlled by them. This results in symptoms such as muscle weakness, tremors and impaired balance. The standard treatment for these patients is levodopa. However, long-term treatment with levodopa is associated with negative effects, affecting the quality of life of patients and their caregivers.
As there is no cure for PD at the moment, it is very important to treat the symptoms that have a significant impact on the quality of life.
Methods & findings
This study included information about 78 patients with PD treated with levodopa. Patients were followed-up for 1 year and symptoms, levodopa side effects, and quality of life were assessed.
Levodopa negative side effects were dyskinesia (13.5%; sudden and uncontrollable movements) and wearing off (55.9%; symptoms get better and then worse between doses). After 1-year worse dyskinesia and wearing off symptoms were seen.
There was a significant decrease in the overall quality of life such as in daily activities and emotional well-being. Mental function and communication were the most affected.
The bottom line
This study suggested that levodopa-induced complications had a significant impact on the quality of life of patients.
The fine print
This study only included patients with mild to moderate Parkinson disease from Singapore. Therefore, the more severe cases were not represented.
What’s next?
