In a nutshell
The investigators looked at the effects of cholesterol-lowering drugs from the statin group in patients with multiple myeloma (MM). The study found improved survival in patients who used statins before and after the diagnosis was made.
Some background
Multiple myeloma (MM) is a cancer resulting in abnormal proliferation of plasma cells. It often results from genetic abnormalities. Many patients with MM have other medical conditions such as high cholesterol levels. Statins are drugs that are typically used to lower blood cholesterol levels. Atorvastatin (Lipitor) or rosuvastatin (Crestor) are statin drugs. They have recently been found to have immunomodulatory properties like the prevention of excess inflammation and cell growth. These mechanisms may be useful in inhibiting tumor growth.
It is important to evaluate if the use of statins in patients with MM, either before or after diagnosis, would have any effects on survival.
Methods & findings
The study involved 4,315 patients with MM. They were followed up for an average of 1.9 years. Information regarding the use of statins was taken from medical records. Survival was assessed in relation to statin use.
Overall, statin use during follow-up reduced mortality rate associated with MM by 35% compared to those who did not use statins. The use of statins 6 months before diagnosis reduced mortality related to MM by 17% and mortality from all causes by 15%. The use of statins during 6 months after diagnosis reduced mortality related to MM by 27% and mortality from all causes by 19%.
Higher doses of statins were associated with better outcomes. The duration of statin use did not have any impact on survival.
The bottom line
The authors found that statin use before and after diagnosis with MM improved the survival of these patients.
The fine print
The study had a limited follow-up period and sample size. Also, it included only patients from Sweden so it may not apply to all populations. Further, larger studies are needed.
What’s next?
If you have concerns regarding MM and statin use, please discuss this with your doctor.
