In a nutshell
This study looked at the causes and treatment of anemia in patients with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). Researchers found that early diagnosis and treatment of anemia had better outcomes for these patients.
Some background
Anemia is a low ability of the blood to carry oxygen. This leads to tiredness and low energy. Anemia can have many causes such as low nutrients. This is common in patients with ALL. Anemia can influence the outcomes of these patients. Therefore, it is important to research the causes and treatments of anemia in patients with ALL.
Methods & findings
105 patients with ALL were included in this study. All patients were on maintenance therapy (treatment given after a main therapy to keep the cancer from coming back). Blood tests were carried out to check for low vitamins and nutrients. Patients with low nutrients were given supplements.
84 (80%) were found to have anemia. Of these, 38 (45%) had low folate. 7 (8%) had low Vitamin B12. Using supplements reduced treatment side effects and fever. Patients with anemia were found to have a higher chance of disease returning (14.64%) compared to patients without anemia (8.36%).
The bottom line
The study concluded that early diagnosis and treatment of anemia leads to better outcomes for patients with ALL.
The fine print
This study is limited by a small sample size. Larger studies are required.
What’s next?
Discuss with your doctor about checking for anemia during your treatment.
