Some background
Infertility is a growing problem worldwide. Sometimes the cause of infertility can be determined and treated. In many cases, it is difficult to point out the root cause. This is called unexplained infertility. Recurrent pregnancy loss (RPL) is a common feature of unexplained infertility. Metabolic conditions, genetic defects and womb abnormalities are linked to RPL. However, male factors are less well explored.
Some studies suggest that damage to sperm DNA can have an effect on the developing embryo. Sperm DNA fragmentation (sDF) is not routinely measured before in vitro fertilization (IVF). It is unclear is sDF is linked to RPL couples undergoing IVF.
Methods & findings
This study analyzed the findings of 14 clinical reports. This included 530 men that were part of couples with RPL. It also included 639 fertile men as a control group. sDF was measured using different laboratory tests. Sperm motility (movement of sperm cells) was also measured.
sDF was significantly associated with RPL. Men with a history of RPL had higher rates of sDF. Sperm motility and age did not have an effect on the link between sDF and RPL.
The bottom line
this study found that sDF is associated with RPL.
The fine print
This study demonstrates a link between sDF and RPL. It is still unclear if sDF can lead to RPL. It is also unclear if measuring sDF can predict RPL. More investigation is needed.
