In a nutshell

This study investigated if consumption of certain foods affects risks in pregnancy. They found that poor consumption of dairy, fruit and dark green leafy vegetables was linked to an increased risk in pregnancy.

Some background

A healthy diet during pregnancy is important for both the mother and baby. Poor nutrition during pregnancy is linked to adverse pregnancy outcomes (APOs). APOs include preterm birth (PTB), low-birth-weight (LBW) and stillbirth

Some studies suggest that certain diets may be more beneficial to reduce APOs. In many of these studies, patients are from high-income settings. Less is known about APO risk and diet in poorer settings. It is unclear if certain food groups are associated with lower APO risk during pregnancy.

Methods & findings

This study included 374 pregnant women. Every month, patients were asked about their diet. According to their diets, women were categorized as either diversified and non-diversified. Patients also underwent standard maternity care procedures.

Poor consumption of dark green leafy vegetables (GLV), fruits and other vegetables and dairy was linked to an increase in APOs. The risk of APOs was 92% higher in patients with poor GLV consumption. Women with a poor consumption of dairy products were 3 times more likely to experience APOs.

The bottom line

The authors concluded that poor consumption of dairy, fruit and dark green leafy vegetables was linked to an increased risk in pregnancy.

The fine print

This study was conducted in Ethiopia. Dietary patterns may differ in other countries. The evidence in this study suggests diet may affect the risk of APOs. To confirm this a randomized placebo-controlled trial is needed.
