In a nutshell
This study investigated if there is a link between Vitamin D deficiency before conception and pregnancy loss. They found that sufficient preconception Vitamin D is associated with higher chances of pregnancy and live birth.
Some background
Vitamin D (Vit D) is an important nutrient for maintaining overall health. It may also be important for reproductive health. Studies in animals show that Vit D deficiency can cause ovarian dysfunction and reduced fertility.
Some studies suggest that higher preconception Vit D can improve the chances of in vitro fertilization (IVF) success. Research shows that Vit D is important in all pregnancies. However, it is unclear if preconception Vit D levels are important in women trying to conceive naturally.
Methods & findings
This study included 1191 women attempting to become pregnant, who have previously had pregnancy losses. Vit D levels were measured at the beginning of the study (preconception) and at 8 weeks of pregnancy. Patients were classified as Vit D insufficient (47%; below 75 nmol/L) or sufficient (53%; greater or equal to 75 nmol/L).
Sufficient Vit D was associated with a 10% higher chance of pregnancy and a 15% higher chance of live birth compared to insufficient Vit D. The risk of pregnancy loss was reduced by 12% in patients with sufficient Vit D. Vit D in early pregnancy (at 8 weeks) was not associated with pregnancy loss.
The bottom line
The authors concluded that sufficient levels of Vitamin D preconception are associated with higher chances of pregnancy and live birth.
The fine print
Other factors can interfere with Vit D levels such as genetics. More investigation is needed to determine the role of Vit D in fertility health.
