In a nutshell

This study investigated the frequency of sexual dysfunction in women with infertility. This study concluded that infertility was significantly associated with an increase in sexual dysfunction among women.

Some background

Infertility can have significant negative effects on women. These include emotional and psychological stress. This, in turn, can affect the quality of life, relationships, and sexual activity. Studies show that women with infertility have more sexual dysfunction compared to the general population. This can include decreased sexual desire, lubrication, satisfaction, and frequency of intercourse.

However, studies evaluating sexual function among couples with infertility have had mixed results. The frequency of sexual dysfunction in women with infertility remains under investigation.

Methods & findings

This study analyzed the results of 23 studies. A total of 4,085 women with infertility were included. 2,547 women who did not have infertility were also included (control group). Sexual dysfunction was the main outcome measured.

Overall, sexual dysfunction was more common in women with infertility. Among the analyzed studies it ranged from 35.6% to 87.1%.

An analysis of 11 studies found a significant association between an increase in sexual dysfunction and infertility in women.

A second analysis of 10 studies found that women with infertility had more problems with lubrication, orgasm, and sexual satisfaction compared to the control group. However, infertility was not associated with decreased sexual desire.

The bottom line

This study concluded that infertility was significantly associated with an increase in sexual dysfunction among women. The most affected areas of sexual function were lubrication, orgasm, and satisfaction.

The fine print

The studies analyzed here were all quite different. Patients varied in age, diagnosis of infertility, and treatments. The control group may also not be representative of the general population. More research is needed.
