In a nutshell
This study investigated if caffeine intake affects the success of fertility treatment. They found that the outcome of fertility treatment was not associated with caffeine intake.
Some background
Caffeine is found in popular food and drinks such as coffee and chocolate. Caffeine causes you to feel alert and energized. It is unclear if caffeine can negatively affect your health.
Research suggests that caffeine intake can influence the success of fertility treatment. Other reports suggest that caffeine has no effect on the success of assisted reproduction techniques (ART). In vitro fertilization (IVF) and intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) are ARTs. It is important to establish the role of caffeine consumption by both partners in the success of ARTs.
Methods & findings
This study included 339 couples undergoing fertility treatment (ARTs). Male and female caffeine intake was recorded at the beginning of the study. Medical history and lifestyle habits were also recorded. Follow-up was performed at the end of fertility treatment. The number of oocytes (eggs) retrieved, pregnancy and birth rates were recorded.
Male or female caffeine intake was not associated with any outcomes. Caffeine intake did not affect the number of oocytes retrieved or the length of pregnancy. Clinical pregnancy and live birth rates were also not affected by caffeine intake.
The bottom line
The authors concluded that the outcome of fertility treatment was not associated with caffeine intake.
The fine print
Caffeine intake may be overestimated or underestimated in this study. Further investigation is needed.
