In a nutshell
This study investigated if there is a link between vitamin D (vitD) levels and male infertility.
They found that vitD levels were higher in fertile patients compared to infertile men.
Some background
Male infertility (MI) accounts for up to 50% of cases. The cause of MI is not always clear. Many factors can influence semen quality. Age, smoking, and body mass index (BMI) can influence semen quality. Diet may also have an important effect on semen quality.
Vitamin D (VitD) is an important nutrient. It is involved in regulating calcium and bone health. VitD also plays an important role in the production of sperm (spermatogenesis). Some studies suggest that vitD levels are associated with semen quality. There are also conflicting studies to suggest there is no link. An analysis of studies investigating vitD and semen quality is needed.
Methods & findings
This study included 18 clinical reports investigating vitD and SQ. 4773 men were included. Fertile and infertile men were included in the studies. VitD was measured using a standard laboratory test for vitD [25(OH)D].
In mid and high-quality studies there was a link between fertility status and 25(OH)D levels. VitD levels were higher in fertile patients compare to infertile ones. There was no association between 25(OH)D and sperm concentration, shape or semen volume. Sperm motility was significantly associated with 25(OH)D levels.
The bottom line
The authors concluded that vitD levels were higher in fertile patients compared to infertile men.
The fine print
The studies included in the analysis were very different. This makes it more difficult to compare results. More studies are needed to confirm the findings of this analysis.
