In a nutshell
This study investigated if taking anti-hypertensive drugs (AHDs) was more effective when done in the morning or evening in managing hypertension. They found that AHDs were similarly effective when taken in the morning or evening.
Some background
Hypertension or high blood pressure can be managed using medication. These medications are called anti-hypertensive drugs (AHDs). In many cases, they are taken once daily. Some studies suggest that taking AHDs in the evening is more effective in managing hypertension.
It is unclear whether taking AHDs in the morning or evening results in better cardiovascular outcomes.
Methods & findings
This study included 103 patients taking at least one AHD to manage hypertension. Patients were randomly assigned to take their medication either in the morning or in the evening over 12 weeks. At the end of this phase, patients switched to the opposite time of day. This lasted another 12 weeks. Blood pressure was measured using a monitor that measured 24-hour ambulatory (while moving) blood pressure.
Average blood pressure readings were similar in patients that took AHDs in the morning and evening. There was also no difference in body weight, heart rates or quality of life.
The bottom line
The authors concluded that AHDs were similarly effective when taken in the morning or evening in managing hypertension.
The fine print
This study lasted only 24 weeks. It is possible that there are long-term benefits to either morning or evening dosing. Further investigation is needed.
