In a nutshell
This study aimed to review side-effects for collagenase Clostridium histolyticum (CCH) treatment for Peyronie's disease (PD). This study found that common side-effects of CCH include pain, swelling and bleeding.
Some background
Peyronie's disease (PD) is caused by scar tissue that forms inside the penis. It can result in a bent, rather than straight, erect penis. It reduces the quality of life of patients. CCH injections are used to treat PD. However, the side-effects of CCH are still unknown.
Methods & findings
This study reviewed articles on the treatment of PD with CCH. Side effects of this treatment and their management were reviewed.
Side-effects of CCH include pain and swelling. Cold packs and elastic pressure dressings can help with these side effects.
Most patients experience bleeding and bruising. Most of these occur at the injection site and require compressive wound dressing for 2 weeks. However, large or painful collections of blood may require stopping treatment.
Rare side-effects include penis fracture. This is a break in one of the fibers in the penis. X-rays or ultrasound can be used to diagnose this. Allergic reactions are rare.
The bottom line
This study found that the most common side-effects of CCH include pain, swelling, and bleeding, which are manageable.
