In a nutshell

This study aimed to see if low vitamin D levels were related to erectile dysfunction (ED). The study found that low vitamin D was associated with higher levels of ED in men.

Some background

Erectile dysfunction is a common sexual problem among men of adult age. It often caused by damaged blood vessels in the penis. Low vitamin D levels are associated with damaged blood vessels. It is necessary to study if low vitamin D levels may cause ED.

Methods & findings

3390 men aged 20 and older without cardiovascular disease (heart and blood vessel damage) were studied. The men had vitamin D levels measured and were asked if they had erectile dysfunction.

30% of men had low Vitamin D levels. 15.2% of men had erectile dysfunction. Vitamin D levels were lower in men with erectile dysfunction. This included when other factors were considered such as lifestyle and medication use.

The bottom line

The study concluded that low vitamin D levels were associated with erectile dysfunction

The fine print

Erectile dysfunction was self-reported which may have affected the accuracy of the study. More research on how low vitamin D causes ED could be useful.
