In a nutshell
This review examined whether certain beverages contribute to type 2 diabetes. This study conlcuded that sugar sweetened beverages increased the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
Some background
Sugar sweetened (SS) beverages likely contribute to obesity and type 2 diabetes (T2D). Artificially sweetened (AS) beverages and fruit juice are alternatives to SS beverages. However, it is not known whether AS beverages and fruit juice also contribute to T2D.
Methods & findings
This review aimed to determine the associations between various beverages and T2D.
This review summarized findings from previously published studies. The studies followed participants over time to determine whether they developed T2D.
One serving of a SS beverage daily increased the incidence of T2D by 13%. Regular consumption of AS beverages increased the incidence of T2D by 8%. Regular consumption of fruit juice increased the incidence of T2D by 7%.
In the US, SS beverages contribute to 8.7% of T2D. In the UK, SS beverages contribute to 3.6% of T2D.
The bottom line
This review concluded that regular consumption of SS beverages contributes to T2D. Regular consumption of AS beverages and fruit juice may also contribute to T2D.
The fine print
The studies analyzed did not account for additional factors such as changes in lifestyle factors. This made it difficult to confirm that AS beverages and fruit juice contribute to T2D.
What’s next?
Consult your physician regarding the importance of a healthy diet for the prevention of T2D.
