In a nutshell

This study examined the association between physical activity and long term survival among colorectal cancer patients.

Some background

While many advances have been made in colorectal cancer treatments over recent years, mortality and recurrence rates remain high. Physical activity is known to increase overall heath and survival, as well as reducing the risk of developing colorectal cancer. Whether or not physical activity following cancer diagnosis could increase survival is the focus of current investigation.

Methods & findings

This review analyzed the results of seven studies investigating the effects of physical activity on colorectal cancer mortality. A total of 6,348 colorectal cancer patients were included in the analysis of physical activity after diagnosis, and 5,299 colorectal cancer patients were included in the analysis of physical activity before diagnosis.

The analysis showed that patients who participated in any amount of physical activity before diagnosis showed a 25% reduced risk for cancer-related mortality compared to patients who did not participate in any physical activity. Similarly, patients who participated in any amount of physical activity after diagnosis showed a 26% reduced risk of cancer-related mortality compared to patients who did not participate in any activities. High amounts of physical activity after diagnosis (18 hours or more per week) were associated with a 35% reduction in the risk of cancer related mortality compared to low levels of physical activity (less than 3.5 hours per week). Overall mortality (including death from non-cancer related causes) was also significantly reduced among patients participating in any amount of physical activity.

The bottom line

This study concluded that any amount of physical activity, both before and after diagnosis with colorectal cancer, significantly decreases the risk of mortality.

The fine print

The types of physical activity examined in the reviewed studies are not specified. In addition, patients who are physically active are more likely to have an overall healthy lifestyle, which could be a significant factor in cancer survival. Finally, the studies reviewed were preformed in a prospective manner. Controlled studies are warranted to further investigate the effect of exercise on mortality and recurrence risks.

What’s next?

Discuss with your physician regarding various exercise programs and their effect on cancer mortality.
