How effective and safe are ultra-rapid insulin analogues in insulin pumps for patients with type 1 diabetes?

This review assessed the effectiveness and safety of ultra-rapid insulin analogs (URIAs) with continuous subcutaneous insulin systems (CSII) in adults with type 1 diabetes (T1D). The authors concluded that URIAs were compatible with CSII systems and had a better glucose-lowering effect after meals compared to rapid-acting insulin analogs (RAIAs) but may need more infusion set changes.

How does physical activity affect the occurrence of major diabetes-related complications?

This study evaluated evidence on the association between physical activity and major diabetes-related complications in patients with diabetes. The authors concluded that physical activity was associated with a reduction in the occurrence of major diabetes-related complications, even if performed at levels lower than recommended.

Is real time glucose monitoring better than intermittent scanning for patients with type 1 diabetes?

This study compared intermittent scanning continuous glucose monitoring (isCGM) with real-time continuous glucose monitoring (rtCGM) for the treatment of type 1 diabetes (T1D). It found that compared to isCGM, rt CGM resulted in increased time spent in range and improved blood glucose control in these patients.

How effective and safe is dapagliflozin as an add-on therapy to insulin in patients with type 1 diabetes?

This study evaluated the most effective and safe dose of dapagliflozin (Farxiga) as an additional treatment to insulin in patients with type 1 diabetes (T1D). The authors concluded that 10 mg of dapagliflozin as an add-on to insulin treatment resulted in improved blood glucose (sugar) control, reduced insulin dosage, and body weight without causing an elevated risk of low blood glucose in these patients.

Can a low-carbohydrate diet affect insulin-resistant lipoprotein metabolism?

This study determined the effect of varying carbohydrate and saturated fat dietary contents on cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors during weight-loss maintenance. The authors concluded that restriction of carbohydrates provided improved insulin resistance on lipoprotein metabolism, without unwanted side effects on low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol or inflammation.

Can physical activity affect glucose levels variations in patients with diabetes?

This study evaluated the effect of physical activity interventions on glycemic variability (GV; glucose levels variations) in patients with diabetes. The data showed that physical activity was associated with significantly reduced GV in these patients.

Does continuous insulin infusion protect against diabetic eye disease?

This study looked at continuous subcutaneous insulin infusions (CSII) for the treatment of diabetic retinopathy (DR; eye disease). It found that compared to multiple daily injections of insulin (MDI), CSII resulted in a less worsening of DR.

Does real-time glucose monitoring improve diabetic control in patients with type 1 diabetes?

This study compared two methods of continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) for patients with type 1 diabetes (T1D). It found that compared to intermittent monitoring, real-time monitoring led to better glucose control and reduced risk of severe hypoglycemia.

Can eye drops with citicoline and vitamin B12 help to prevent worsening of diabetic eye disease?

This study looked at the use of citicoline and vitamin B12 eye drops (OMK2) to prevent diabetic retinopathy (DR; eye disease) in patients with type 1 diabetes (T1D). It found that using these drops for 36 months improved eye function tests.

Can an eye exam be used to check for diabetic nerve disease?

This study looked at the relationship between changes in the retinal nerves (diabetic retinopathy; DR) and changes in the nerves of the hands and feet (diabetic neuropathy; DN) in adolescents with type 1 diabetes (T1D). It found that tests that monitor the retinal nerves such as OCTA which is a quick and inexpensive test, could be used to identify patients with DN who need further nerve investigations.
