In a nutshell

This study aimed to investigate depression in prostate cancer patients. This study found that depression is a major challenge for prostate cancer survivors.

Some background

Men who are diagnosed with cancer can have a higher risk of developing depression. However, it is unclear how many patients with prostate cancer experience depression. The risk factors are also unknown.

Methods & findings

This study included 1031 men with prostate cancer. They were followed up every year to assess for mental health problems. They completed questionnaires to assess their mood.

38% of patients had probable depression the first year they were diagnosed with cancer. This rate fell to 20% 7 years later. Risk factors for experiencing mental health problems were younger age, low income, past depression and not exercising. Those who regretted their choice of treatment were at higher risk of depression.

The bottom line

This study found that depression is a major challenge for prostate cancer survivors.

The fine print

This study could not distinguish new depression from relapse of an older depression. This might have influenced the results.

What’s next?

Speak to your doctor if you are worried about low mood.
