In a nutshell

This study investigated the effect of a Mediterranean diet (MD) on sperm quality. They found that adhering to an MD increased sperm motility.

Some background

Infertility is a growing problem for couples worldwide. One cause of this is reduced male fertility. Sperm quality has declined in recent years. It is unclear what has caused this. Some factors that might influence it include pollution, smoking, and alcohol. Poor diet has also been suggested as a cause. Studies have shown that semen is affected by the foods we eat.

Certain dietary patterns may be beneficial for sperm health. The Mediterranean diet (MD) is one of the healthiest dietary patterns. MD is high in olive oil, fruit and vegetables, nuts and whole cereals. Red meat, dairy, and processed foods are eaten in moderation. As with any dietary pattern, adherence is important. Varying levels of adherence can have different effects. It is unclear if adherence to the MD is important for sperm quality.

Methods & findings

This study included 106 men. Sperm quality was assessed at the start of the study. Dietary intake was measured using the food frequency questionnaire. Adherence to the MD was ranked into three levels.

Men in the highest MD adherence category had higher pH and sperm motility. A 12.8% increase in sperm motility was observed in high MD adherence.

The bottom line

The authors concluded that adhering to a Mediterranean diet increased sperm motility.

The fine print

The number of men in this study was relatively low. Patients were healthy so it is unclear if the same benefits will be seen in patients with certain medical conditions.
