In a nutshell

This study compared the safety and effectiveness of sildenafil (Viagra) taken as a film-coated tablet (FCT – swallowed) and oro-dispersible film (ODF – dissolved in the mouth). The study found that FCT and ODF had the same effectiveness but that patients preferred ODF.

Some background

Sildenafil is a commonly used drug to treat erectile dysfunction (ED – difficulty achieving and maintaining an erection). FCT is the most common form of this medication. ODF may be easier for patients to take. It is necessary to compare the safety and effectiveness of sildenafil ODF and FCT.

Methods & findings

139 patients with ED were studied. All patients were given sildenafil 100 mg FCT for 4 weeks. After a 2-week washout period (time to allow the drug to leave the patient’s body), patients were given sildenafil 75 mg ODF for 4 weeks. All patients completed questionnaires on severity and improvement of ED.

Improvements in sexual function were better for 100 mg FCT. Patient satisfaction was higher for 75 mg ODF.

The bottom line

The study concluded that ODF form of sildenafil was safe and effective. This was the preferred option by patients.

The fine print

Studies comparing the same dose of sildenafil in the different forms should be carried out.

What’s next?

Talk to your doctor about your preferred form to take sildenafil.
