In a nutshell

This study looked at the safety and effectiveness of a new penile traction device for the treatment of Peyronie's disease (PD). It concluded that this device could improve PD.

Some background

Peyronie’s disease (PD) is an abnormal curvature of the penis when it is erect. The curvature is caused by scar tissue, called a plaque, forming in the penis. Surgery to remove the scar tissue is an option to treat PD, though it can be associated with complications. Other therapies include medication and mechanical devices.

Penimaster Pro is a new mechanical device. Penile traction devices try to gently extend the penis and allow proteins, called enzymes, to break down the plaque. The Penimaster Pro is gentler than other traction devices. Traction devices can be a good alternative to surgery because they can have fewer complications.

Methods & findings

80 men were included in this study. These patients had stable and ongoing PD. They were divided into two groups. Group 1 included 41 men used the device for 12 weeks. Group 2 included 39 men who did not use the device for 12 weeks. The patients were assessed for the change in the degree of penile curve when it was erect, the length of the penis when it was stretched and side effects. The patients were also assessed based on a PD symptom questionnaire and an erectile function questionnaire. Patients recorded the amount of device use in a diary.

Group 1 had a 41.1% improvement in penile curve at week 12. Patients who used the device 4 hours per day had a 28.8% improvement in penile curve. Patients who used the device for more than 6 hours a day had a 51.4% improvement in penile curve. The device didn't improve stretched penile length. The device slightly improved erectile function. PD symptoms improved significantly in group 1 but didn't change in group 2. 43% of patients had side effects. These included discomfort and numbness. Most side effects were mild. 2 patients had swelling, which improved over time. 1 patient had significant pain but they did not follow the device instructions properly.

The bottom line

This study concluded that the traction device was safe and effective to improve PD.

The fine print

The authors note that this study only had a short follow-up time. This may affect the study's results.
