In a nutshell

This study aimed to review the effect of dietary supplements on erectile dysfunction (ED). This study found that ginseng could be beneficial in ED, but it needs further study and evaluation.

Some background

Erectile dysfunction (ED) is the inability to get or keep an erection firm enough to have sexual intercourse. ED is a common condition that significantly affects the quality of life and relationships. It is unknown if herbal dietary supplements are of any help with this condition.

Methods & findings

This study included data from 24 clinical trials with a total of 2080 patients with ED. Different herbal supplements were used by the patients. 399 men used ginseng. 397 used saffron. 202 men took Tribulus terrestris. 21 took Pinus pinaster (maritime pine) and 50 took Lepidium meyenii (maca).

Ginseng was the only herbal supplemental that significantly improved erectile function. There was not a high enough level of information to say if the other supplements were useful.

The bottom line

This study found that ginseng could be a promising herbal treatment for ED.

The fine print

These results are based on different smaller trials with short treatment periods. Further study and evaluation is needed for more conclusive evidence.
