In a nutshell

This study investigated if sleep disturbance is associated with sexual dysfunction (SXD). They found that sleep dysfunction was linked to SXD in older people.

Some background

Sexual activity tends to decline as people age. Some people may have a loss of libido (sexual interest). Other people may have medical or psychological conditions that lead to sexual dysfunction (SXD). SXD can be detrimental to a person’s mental health. It can also have a negative effect on their relationships.

Sleep disturbance is a possible cause of SXD. Sleep disturbances also increase with age. It is also linked to some of the same conditions as SXD. These include depression and cardiovascular disease. It is unclear if sleep quality (SQ) is associated with SXD.

Methods & findings

This study included 2,568 men and 1,376 women. Patients in this study were aged 50 and over. Follow-up was performed every 2 years. Patients were asked to report their SQ and sleep duration (SD). Patients were also asked about their sexual function.

In women, the odds of arousal problems was 53% greater in those that reported moderate SQ. The odds of arousal problems was 70% greater in those that reported low SQ. Low SQ was associated with 63% greater difficulty in achieving an orgasm in women. In men, moderate SQ was linked to a 24% greater chance of erectile dysfunction. Long sleep (more than 8 hours) was associated with a 75% greater difficulty in achieving an orgasm in men.

The bottom line

The authors concluded that sleep dysfunction was linked to SXD in older people.

The fine print

This study does not provide evidence of a direct link between sleep disturbance and SXD. There may be a common factor that leads to both conditions. More investigation is needed.
