In a nutshell

This study investigated the association between shift work sleep disorder and erectile dysfunction (ED) in shift workers. Researchers suggested that shift work might be a risk factor for ED.

Some background

ED affects 18 million men in the US. It consists of the inability to have and/or keep an erection long enough for sex.

Shift work involves work hours during periods normally occupied by sleep. Over 15% of worldwide workers are shift workers, such as healthcare and hospitality. These workers are at risk of having a sleep disorder, due to an impaired awake/sleep cycle. This sleep disorder is characterized by at least 1 month of increased sleepiness, insomnia (difficulty falling asleep), and impaired social and occupational activities. It is important to evaluate the impact of shift working on ED.

Methods & findings

This study included information about 204 shift workers (begins work before 7 AM or after 6 PM). Of these, 48 had a sleep disorder caused by shift work. Participants were asked to complete questionnaires evaluating their overall health and presence of ED.

Shift workers with sleep disorders had a higher risk or having ED when compared to men without sleep disorders. Men who worked night shifts were at a greater risk of ED than men who worked during the day or evening. Testosterone use improved ED for men with sleep disorders

The bottom line

This study concluded that shift working is a risk factor for developing ED in men, particularly in those with sleep disorders.

The fine print

This study included a large number of men already on testosterone therapy, which could have affected the results.
