In a nutshell

This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of tadalafil (Cialis) on the quality of life (QoL) in men with erectile dysfunction (ED). This study found that tadalafil is a safe and effective treatment to improve ED and overall QoL.

Some background

Erectile dysfunction (ED) is the inability to get or keep an erection firm enough to have sexual intercourse. It can be caused by several medical reasons. It is commonly found in aging men due to decreasing testosterone (the main male sex hormone) levels. This is called andropause. It can reduce the quality of life (QoL) of patients.

ED can be treated by drugs such as tadalafil. However, the effect of a small daily dose of tadalafil on the QoL of aging patients remains under investigation.

Methods & findings

This study included 40 South Korean men with andropause symptoms. Questionnaires and exams were used to evaluate their QoL, testosterone levels and sexual function. Patients took 5mg of tadalafil every day for 8 weeks.

Sexual function and QoL was significantly improved at 4 weeks and 8 weeks of treatment. There were no side-effects noted.

The bottom line

This study found that tadalafil is a safe and effective treatment to improve ED and overall QoL.

The fine print

This study had a very small number of patients. Also, it included only South Korean men. Larger studies on more diverse populations are needed for more conclusive results.
