In a nutshell

This study examined if Omega-3 fatty acid supplementation could improve kidney function in patients with diabetes and hypertriglyceridemia.

They found that a daily dose of 4 grams of Omega-3 fatty acids improved kidney function in these diabetic patients.

Some background

A common complication of diabetes is kidney disease. If it is not managed appropriately patients can develop end-stage renal disease (ESRD). Omega-3 fatty acids (O3Fas) are polyunsaturated fatty acids and can be found in fish oil. O3FAs can reduce blood triglyceride levels, a type of fat that can lead to heart disease. There is also evidence to suggest O3FAs can reduce high blood pressure. High blood pressure is a major risk factor for the development of kidney disease. Therefore, O3FAs may be useful for the treatment of kidney disease in diabetic patients.

Methods & findings

This was a retrospective study. 344 Type 2 diabetes patients were included in the analysis. These patients were receiving O3FA supplementation to treat hypertriglyceridemia. Kidney function was assessed by glomerular filtration rate (GFR) and urine albumin to creatinine ratio (ACR). As GFR cannot be improved once it has started to deteriorate, preservation of GFR is important.

Overall, urine ACR was significantly reduced after O3FA supplementation. A higher daily intake of O3FAs was associated with greater GFR preservation. 63.3% of patients taking 4 grams O3FAs per day did not see GFR decline compared to 37.9% treated with 1 gram per day.

The bottom line

This study concluded that a daily dose of 4 grams O3FAs was associated with improved kidney function.

The fine print

This study addressed a small number of patients in a Korean population. These patients were also on other medications that may have also affected kidney function. O3FAs successfully treated hypertriglyceridemia in these patients that may have also impacted kidney function. This in itself may improve renal function.

What’s next?

Omega-3 fatty acids are an essential component of a healthy diet. It is important to discuss any supplementation or dietary changes with your doctor.
