In a nutshell

This study looked at the effect of nano-curcumin supplements on depression and anxiety in patients with diabetes and nerve damage. It found that taking nano-curcumin for eight weeks reduced depression and anxiety in these patients.

Some background

Patients with diabetes often have high rates of anxiety, depression, and stress. Poor mental health negatively impacts the patients’ lives, and makes it more difficult for them to manage the treatment of their diabetes. Also, patients with diabetes and depression or anxiety are more likely to develop nerve damage due to diabetes. This condition is known as diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN).

Some patients have difficulty with the side effects of standard antidepressant medications. Because inflammation plays a role in depression, herbal medicines with antioxidant properties may be beneficial. Curcumin is an antioxidant found in the spice turmeric. Nano-curcumin is in small microscopic pieces, making it easier for the body to absorb. Curcumin has an effect on neurotransmitters in the brain. Some studies have found that curcumin can reduce depression and anxiety. It is unclear whether nano-curcumin can reduce depression and anxiety in patients with diabetes and DPN.

Methods & findings

This study included 80 patients with type 2 diabetes and DPN. 40 patients were assigned to take nano-curcumin supplements (80mg/day), and 40 took a placebo (inactive pills). The two groups had similar body weights and diets. The patients were followed for 8 weeks. The Depression, Anxiety, Stress Scale was used to assess mental health before and after the intervention.

After 8 weeks of taking nano-curcumin, there was a significant decline in depression (16.7 to 15.3) and anxiety (22.4 to 20.6) scores compared to the beginning of the study. No improvements were seen in the placebo group. These results were the same after adjusting for age, exercise, and blood glucose levels.

Two patients taking nano-curcumin experienced stomachaches. There were no serious side effects.

The bottom line

This study found that nano-curcumin supplements significantly reduced anxiety and depression in patients with type 2 diabetes and DPN.

The fine print

This study had a small number of patients and short follow-up. Also, only 12.5% of patients were male. More studies are needed.
