In a nutshell
This study investigated the effects of a healthy lifestyle (HL) in the quality of life of colorectal cancer survivors. Researchers suggested that a HL may improve the quality of life of these patients.
Some background
Colorectal cancer has become one of the most common cancers in the world. Given the effectiveness of the treatment and early diagnosis the survival rates have improved. However, the quality of life of most survivors significantly decreases. Survivors have tiredness and pain symptoms due to cancer and its treatment which affects their daily living activities. Moreover, this also affects the emotional health of these patients. Prior studies showed that a HL is associated with improved quality of life and survival.
In the standard rehabilitation program, survivors go back to the hospital often for an occupational therapy session. However, this may be a burden on these survivors and leads to a high drop-out rate. Therefore, providing therapy based on HL education can be a good alternative option for these patients.
The impact of HL in the quality of life of colorectal cancer survivors is not clear.
Methods & findings
This study included 68 colorectal cancer survivors. They were randomly assigned to receive occupational therapy (OT) or standard rehabilitation therapy. Patients were given a HL handbook when they left the hospital and followed-up after 1 and 3 months or not followed-up. These sessions were based in HL education and suggestions.
Patients who were followed-up after OT had an improved quality of life and mental health when compared to the ones who were not followed.
The bottom line
This study concluded that a HL with an occupational therapist improves the quality of life and mental health of colorectal cancer survivors.
The fine print
This study included a limited number of participants. Further studies with a bigger population are needed.
